I have subscribers who count on me to subtitle and caption my videos, and although YouTube has made a valiant effort to
automatically subtitle videos, it doesn't work well.
People who are deaf, hearing impared, and people speaking foreign languages count on good subtitles.
Or, some may just want to watch my videos at work without the boss knowing.
Subtitling my own videos is a chore. If I am not working off a script, I have to watch the video and transcribe it word for word, and note any non-verbal things happening in the video.
Even if I am working off a script, I change a lot of things uring filming, cut out a lot of stuff during editing, and that means
I have to edit that script to match the uploaded video.
Then I have to upload the text, let YouTube queue it up, do its magic, then come back later when it's done. Then I use the YouTube captions editor to make sure everything works and is in order.
I would venture to say I spend at least one hour doing this for a 10 minute video.
I found this service, REV.COM and I am BLOWN AWAY!
No, I get nothing for mentioning them and I am not affiliated
with them in any way. I have to say that for those snarky jerks who think everyone should do everything for free and starve to death.
You go to this website, rev.com and do the following:
Click on GET STARTED, and click on YouTube.
Connect your account and they show you your videos.
Select the video you want subtitled, and pay for it.
ONE DOLLAR A MINUTE!! WHAT!!???
I chose my last video, almost 7 minutes long, and it cost me seven dollars!
Gotta be good to be true...
I placed my order at 9:37 PM, get up the next morning and find my video was done by 1:28 AM, LESS THAN 4 HOURS LATER!!
Yeah. What's the catch...
So I download the SRT file, that's the special captioning format you need to attach to your videos, then I notice this in the email:
"WE WILL UPLOAD THE COMPLETED FILE TO YOUTUBE."
I go to youtube and VOILA!! The captions are there. They also disabled YouTube's not so great auto subtitles, and uploaded the new ones to my video!!
I'm still thinking, "There is NO WAY these are correct!"
I go into the YouTube caption editor and follow them all the way through, and...THEY ARE LETTER PERFECT!!
That's unbelieable! Hours of fiddling around with subtitles gone...FOR SEVEN DOLLARS! BAM!!
Since I also post my videos to VIMEO and other services, I just upload that SRT file they provided, and I am GOLDEN!
Go to REV.com, connect the video, pay ONE DOLLAR per minute, and DO NOTHING ELSE!!
That's EPIC, so I thought I would share it with you in case you need subtitles or captions for your videos.
